Christmas Market

01.12.2017

From Decemer 01st to 23rd, 2017 the medieval town of Rothenburg transforms itself into a fairytale winter wonderland.

Christmas Time, Christmas Market Time! You can find many wonderful Christmas Markets in Germany, and a very special one is the beautiful so called “Reiterlesmarkt” in the world-famous medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Southern Germany, which attracts people from all over the world throughout the year with its walkable town wall, towers and gates, half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, churches, museums and parks.

In the winter season, Rothenburg with its picturesque Old Town transforms itself into a winter wonderland and since the 15th century, a wonderful Christmas Market, which has wisely changed very little from its historical origins, has always been a feature of the festive Christmas season.
Numerous cultural events are held in conjunction with this market, like daily brass band concerts or guided tours through the town or the St. Jacob’s church with its Holy Blood Altar made by Tilman Riemenschneider. The highlight of the market, however, is the appearance of the ‘Rothenburger Reiterle” (Rothenburg horseman), who also gave this market its name. The historical origin of the ‘Reiterle’ comes to us from the dim and distant past. Our ancestors believed that they were messengers from another world, who floated in wintertime through the skies with the souls of the dead. But the image of this mythical character has changed over the centuries.
Whereas one used to tremble in fear before this eerie figure, today, young and old look forward to his return. The wild horseman has become a friendly messenger, who opens the “Reiterlesmarkt” every year.

Today too, the narrow and winding streets and the squares around the impressive Town Hall, its archways and the Market-Square are still lined with stalls where one can find everything the heart and taste buds desire: tasty old German Christmas pastries, hot ‘white’ mulled wine, large or small handcrafted treasures as souvenirs or gifts. On Fridays and Saturdays until 8 pm one can enjoy the marvelous view over the ‘Reiterlesmarkt’ from the Town Hall tower.

Another daily highlight is the guided tour with the famous Rothenburg Night Watchman, who awaits his guests every evening at the Market Square to guide them through the winterly town, with stories about life in the medieval ages.
And so the Rothenburg ‘Reiterlesmarkt’ is today the symbol of a peaceful Christmas market as it has grown over centuries and the city´s decorations for the Christmas holidays lends it a truly romantic character.
